The planned mass burning of copies of the Koran in Florida on Sept. 11 would be “an outrageous and grave gesture,” the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue said Wednesday.

“No one burns the Koran,” read the headline in Tuesday’s L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s paper.

Yikes on that rulebook. Apparently leadership is allowed to flout grammar and spelling rules at will. This just indicates how absolutely ridiculous it is that he is getting media attention.

Buried on the web site for the group planning to burn the sacred texts, however, is clue as to the mindset of those behind the planned bonfire: a posting “in support of Westboro Baptist,” the anti-gay church based in Topeka, Kansas that is run by Fred Phelps.
An April 21 blog entry at the site’s web site recounts that on the previous Sunday, April 18, members of Dove World Outreach Center “went as a church to stand with” a contingent of street preachers from Westboro.

President Barack Obama sternly admonished a pastor Thursday and appealed to him to call off plans to torch the Quran, saying Saturday’s planned protest on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks was a dangerous “stunt” that could imperil U.S. troops abroad and incite suicide bombers on American soil.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iCOmq6xX87ErMuEs3Or3…] Website pulled on US church that wants to burn Korans
The small Florida church that has sparked global outrage with its plan to hold a Koran-burning event had its website pulled from the Internet on Thursday by its host.Comment: I wonder who hosts Westboro’s site?
Dan Goodgame, a spokesman for the San Antonio, Texas-based web hosting firm http://www.rackspace.com/index.php] Rackspace , told AFP the evangelical Dove World Outreach Center church had, “violated the Offensive Content section of its Acceptable Use policy.”
The policy forbids content or links to material that is “excessively violent, incites violence, threatens violence, or contains harassing content or hate speech; and creates a risk to a person’s safety or health, creates a risk to public safety or health, compromises national security, or interferes with a investigation by law enforcement.”
As outrageous as it is for this guy and church to be doing what they are doing… why doesn’t the media get any grief for continuing to keep the story in the public eye? If it is such a small group, and there is concern that it could incite violent response elsewhere, wouldn’t it behoove reporters (or their editors) to take some incentive and find something else worthwhile to talk about? Enough goes on in the world where I am sure there is something else one could report in its place.
