The Dog Ate My Doctrine: Leaving No Place in Our Pews for Theological Laziness

“The latest research reveals several doctrines evangelicals get wrong including the alarming fact that nearly two-thirds of respondents (65%) say Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God….some churchgoers are either misinformed or lazy when it comes to their theology—being easily swayed from sound doctrine by doctrine that only sounds correct.” - F&T

Excerpt from the article:

This is an extremely important question, but it can be used to a fault if we forget the greatest application of Scripture is to simply believe it (John 6:29).

We often say that Scripture is our rule of faith and practice. Or as the WSC Q3 says

Q. 3. What do the Scriptures principally teach?

A. The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.

I once mused on how much people tended to associate “application” with “action items” and take-aways for day-to-day life. But we’d been taking our kids through Starr Meade’s Training Hearts, Teaching Minds and it clicked with me that application always includes what we should believe. What sets Christians apart—at the core—from others is what we believe about the Triune God. It’s what should make us tick.
