He’s got a point or two. Another example of “one of those things we repeat without really thinking about it,” that are so common in our circles.

The problem of defining religion is apparently so sticky that philosophers frequently evade the challenge by appealing to a notion of “family resemblance.” Which may be a cop-out, but is also a pretty handy concept with which we should be more familiar.
