My stepfather has developed friendships among the Amish near Elkhart, IN—two families actually came to my mother’s funeral—and with median family sizes of around 7 kids or so, you’re going to get rapid population growth unless you have very little retention. I would argue that Rumspringa has not just one, but two major effects—they get the opportunity to choose what life they want, and they see how messed up we “English” can be. Giving up TV isn’t as hard after they see some of the dreck there…
