How does Jaeggli’s http://www.bjupress.com/product/261412: The Christian and Drinking compare with other books and scholarly articles?
I haven’t read Jaeggli’s book, but i have read Gentry’s http://www.oakdown.com/books/GodGaveWine_BookPage.shtml God Gave Wine . Gentry makes biblical arguments for the moderationist position, but remains respectful of those who personally abstain even though he is critical of those who advocate a general prohibition. I’ve also read MacLean’s two-part article “Bacchus and Anti-Bacchus” in The Princeton review from 1841 ( http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=moajrnl;cc=moajrn…: part 1 , http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=moajrnl;cc=moajrn…: part 2 ).
I’ve only read http://pastormonte.blogspot.com/2009/07/review-of-jaegglis-christian-an… Marc Monte’s review of The Christian and Drinking . It’s not a scholarly review, but it is pretty long and seems to be thorough. Monte’s view is that the book actually advocates moderation even though it claims to be arguing abstinence.
