Really, the state of the Russian Orthodox Church--being led by a guy who actually spied for the KGB during the Cold War, and who has become a rather "lockstep" endorser of Mr. Putin--is a strong argument for the Biblical principle of separation. Early Christians were not required to continue under the leadership of Judiazers or Diotrephes; today's Christians are not required to pledge allegiance to leaders from the old KGB who predominantly attack civilian targets, or leaders whose statements are almost always demonstrably false. We can call them "that fox", so to speak, and then we can decide whether our opposition ought to be subtle or overt.
