A Simple Question for Complementarians
“…some churches might be in greater danger of sliding down the slippery slope to domestic tyranny and abuse. Others might be in greater danger of sliding down the slippery slope to feminism and egalitarianism. Part of the pastoral task is to learn the dangers of one’s congregation. Which slope is most slippery for you?” - TGC
….by pointing to “slippery slopes”, at which everyone who’s learned his logic is going to say “He’s building his argument off a logical fallacy?”
Thankfully, in actual application, it’s not that bad; a rephrasing of it is that our actions are going to be predicted by our presuppositions, and one “Rosetta Stone” to figure this out is how we handle the “wives submit” and “husbands love” passages. And for that matter, as a committed complementarian, one thing that I do (and should) struggle with is “if we assign headship to men, how do we restrain that authority so it does not become abusive.”
Just as, I might add, any organization is going to need to ask how they propose to restrain the authority of their leaders—they will have authority, be they male or female (e.g. Tony Jones’ abuse of his ex-wife in Edina), and so they’ve got to figure that out, too.
