In my pre-fundamentalist days, I was part of the first church choir to sing at Disney in more than 40 years. Ironically, we sang the Monkees song “I’m a Believer,” and changed the gender from feminine to masculine. I’m not humorless, but to me it was reality, and looking back it was neither cute nor funny. It was truly irreverent.

On a serious note, I’ve learned that one can google lyrics without seeing all the antics of some groups, and while some secular lyrics are downright vile, some others are at times just plain thoughtful and speak to where we are. Generally not suitable for church, but there are lessons to be learned from things like “Cats in the Cradle” and “Unforgiven” by Metallica. But that is a somewhat different topic.
