Christian organization cancels 'Duck Dynasty' event because Robertsons have wine deal

I have never understood Christian’s fascination with Duck Dynasty. We tried to watch it a couple times, and it was so foul, we turned it off mid show. They discussed body parts and bodily functions using words we would never allow to be said in our home and certainly should not be said in a mixed audience. When I’ve mentioned this to friends who like the show, they tell me they must not have watched that episode because they’ve never heard anything offensive on the program.

I agree with you, Michelle, about the “Christian” “fascination”, but I think the problem begins with churchendom (so to speak) at large buying in to yet another next-big-“christian”-thing and leading lemmings along.

I’ve actually enjoyed the show when I’ve watched it, I don’t remember an episode like you described-though that wouldn’t be surprising. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve seen it but I’m sure I’ve cringed a at some things on it, however, if I were to take the show as someone expecting anything deep and abiding I’d turn it off too. (not that you were—just making a point).

It’s “entertainment” first; not a Christian ministry—and one of the most marketable entertainment entities going today. It saddens me to see otherwise reputable Christian organizations/ministries buying into yet another entertainment-value thing and re-packaging it for the Christian “audience”.

That’s not to say the DD as a TV show could not, or has not had a positive effect for Christ. It’s quite possible God’s used the show to move in the life of some people. From what I’ve seen of their testimonies and other “talks” (youtube) I believe they’re one of us-(their as-yet-to-be-solidly-determined beliefs surrounding baptism, ala Church Of Christ affiliation notwithstanding).

They have a show, they’ve been Extremely successful because of it, I wouldn’t judge them for that, nor anyone for watching/not watching; my only concern is with churches/organizations “jumping on the bandwagon” and blurring the lines between worldliness and the Church. I don’t think anyone here would be surprised by that..nothing new under the sun :/

/oh- I wanted to say about this church that canceled-good on them for doing right by their conscience-it could not have been easy to make such a decision.

Reasons for Duck Dynasty’s success:
Even though they get a little edgy, they are still a refreshing change from the filth and immorality regularly shown on TV.
They emphasize Faith, Family, Fun, Facial Hair.
They often show men acting like men, and women acting like women. Of course, they play to an audience and act a little crazy. Some of the rest of us also occasionally do so in real life.
They like a lot of country folk I grew up with. Take away the money, the hair, and the wine, and they’re like some of my family, myself included.
Some appreciate educated, intelligent people that do not necessarily “act like” they are important, educated, or intelligent.
Again, while we will disagree with some of their theology and practices, it sure is nice to see their emphasis on faith and family.

I obviously disagree with some of their theology and their vineyard. Maybe they could check out Draper Valley Vineyard, a vineyard that produces nonalcoholic wine / grape juice from wine grapes (their Pinot Noir is outstanding).

I agree that the Free Will Baptists should be commended for taking a difficult stand against alcohol.

In my opinion, DD glorifies stupidity rather than intelligence. I think it is a travesty that they have the status they do.

Oh I don’t doubt their business acumen; they have figured out that if they act like lazy fools, they can make money. I guess the question is why not have a show that models intelligence instead of stupidity and laziness? There is a market for that. Shark Tank has done pretty well.

Fools is a kind way to put it actually. Most people are foolish, but the DD people put on an act that is far more foolish than normal.

I did not call them fools. I said they act like fools and they do indeed unquestionably act like fools. I wish they didn’t. I wish they acted like they probably really are. That way, they would be setting a good example instead of a poor one.
