Jack A. Schaap charged and signs federal plea deal in relationship with teen

In his plea agreement, which also was filed in federal court today, Schaap admits that he had sex with the girl, the girl was under his care or supervision, and he used a computer to persuade the girl to have sex with him illegally. Schaap was scheduled to have his initial court appearance Wednesday at 3 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Cherry in Hammond. As part of the plea deal, he waived his right to have the charges against him considered by a grand jury for indictment.

Discussion

One of the reasons I wrote this, was so I’d have something to link to when the next “tidbit” came out of this case (or when a new scandal broke, whichever came first). Suggest reading it for some context.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

FBI press release

United States Attorney David Capp announced the filing of a felony information against Jack A. Schaap. Schaap, 54, of Dyer, Indiana, and Crete, Illinois, was charged with interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(a). Schaap signed a plea agreement that was filed in conjunction with the felony Information.

Schaap will have his initial appearance tomorrow, September 19, at 3 p.m. before Magistrate Judge Paul Cherry.

The charge was filed as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jill Koster and Susan Collins.

The United States Attorney’s Office emphasized that an Information is merely an allegation and that all persons charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

If convicted in court, any specific sentence to be imposed will be determined by the judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

An Apple iPad, iPhone, digital camera and digital voice recorder belonging to a disgraced former Baptist pastor are among the evidence showing he had a sexual relationship with a minor, according to court documents made public Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors allege former Pastor Jack Schaap used those — and other — electronic devices when he carried on a sexual relationship with a minor, driving the girl to both Illinois and Michigan between June and July to commit the acts.

Court documents made public Wednesday indicate the U.S. attorney has demanded Schaap forfeit an Apple iPad, iPhone, digital voice recorder, two computer flash drives, a Motorola Razor cell phone and a Canon digital camera “used to commit or to promote the commission of the offense…”
