Separation

What do you believe, what issues do you practice personal separation over? (you won’t sit down and have coffee with the person.)

My understanding is only fundamentals, after the second admonition, and continuous unrepentant sin.

Discussion

Okay..

But when I posted in Theology section, I was hoping for some verses. I should have said that, perhaps.

One principle scripture comes to mind:
1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
Now will one follow this if it is one’s only living family member and that family member happens to be a son or a daughter? Some would, many would not.

The only true God is, who is, the only self evident truth not contingent on any thing else. "[There is] no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD." -- Proverbs 21:30.

A thought on the passage Paul shared.

1) this separation is only between two people professing Christ

‘if any man that is called brother…’ Not sure how else one can interpret that

2) it seems in context, it is probably over being proud of being one of those things

v2 they were proud or puffed up concerning a brother who ‘has his father’s wife.’

3) complete separation.

v10, The strength behind this separation, meaning how far separation needs to go comes from this verse. Paul says if he meant separation over the world we would have to be removed. In vs 11, he corrects only who we are to separate over, not the strength or extent of separation. And that extent should be as if we were no longer here.

4) only primary separation (if you believe in degrees of separation)

The Corinthians were proud of this brother who was with his father’s wife, yet Paul did not separate from them, but told them to separate from this brother in sin.

1Co 5:2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

Seems like the problem here is that they are associating with them because they are puffed up with associating with them, regardless of their sins. I would suggest that the more appropriate interpretation of this chapter is to not stay with sinners JUST BECAUSE you are proud to associate with them. It is not the list of sins as much as the reason for association.

Obviously the question here is whether it is just fornicators (as specified) or sinners as a whole (including liars, covouting, adultry/wrong divorce, etc).

My quick answer:

1. Someone who is in clear and obvious denial of key doctrines (Ruckman, Hyles).

2. Someone who continually lives in a manner that denigrates Christ but who professes to believe and hold correct doctrine (Driscoll).

3. (A little redundancy here - but not the same thing as #2) Someone who is continually and deliberately living disobediently to Christ or Scripture.

"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells

Yes, that someone professing to be a Christian of like faith. The objective is to get the fellow believer right with the Lord, not to vilifiy them. And to be aware of the religious and/or lost to win those to Christ. We do not want to treat them as we would a saved person not living right.
