The Supreme Court and the American Mind

“Why are we asking if the religious composition of the United States Supreme Court should be more representative of America’s religious traditions, now that it is likely that for the first time in its history, the Court is likely not to have one single Protestant on board?” Story

Discussion

Part of the confusion in the dialog on this is that people think the Court represents the people in some way. But it doesn’t. That’s what the elected branches of government are for. So there is no reason for the Court’s constituents to in some way correlate with different people groups in America. Next we’re going to hear that the court should be 50% female, 33% Latino, 2% Asian, etc., I suppose. But representation is not part of the Court’s job.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
