Questions for the NEXT survey

Forum category

This is a thread for posting question suggestions for our next survey… that weren’t asked on the current one. We’ll do one about mid 2010 that consists entirely of questions submitted by SI readers. (We’ll take them from non-members via the contact form)

Discussion

We’ve got a suggestion so far for some questions about music styles & worship

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

This just in…

As a fundamentalist Christian, what is your belief about the proper relationship of a Christian to government?

1. I believe in the divine right of Kings, therefore the United States is an illegitimate government?

2. Government is ordained of God so even if we believe in individual soul liberty, freedom of conscience, and priesthood of the believer, we must always obey every act of government (Romans 13)?

3. Governments make laws, therefore whatever the law says, we must obey.

4. I believe all government/law, to be legitimate, MUST, be obedient to the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God.

5. A true fundamentalist believes that the Law of God is absolute, and can not be violated. In the realm of civil government, the Constitution should be treated in the same manner.

6. According to Romans 13, the only purpose of government is to punish the evil doer?

We need something on views of separation also I think… secondary/second level etc. Nobody has suggested that one yet though.

Aaron, here is another, related to number 4 but different.

7. I believe that I must obey the government, whatever its form, unless it demands me to do something contrary to what God demands (we must obey God rather than man).

Got this question today…
How many of your users are in a position of leadership at their local church

I’m not a thread/survey starter here at SI. I am curious about some information that I would find beneficial and might be insightful to all readers. I’m interested in a survey that would create a matrix of church type/denomination, size, leadership position (lay leader, FT pastor, Bivo pastor, staffer, etc.), growth statistics (your church has grown/decreased by X% in the last year), maybe an opinion as to what constitutes a “small” or “large” church, etc. It might be helpful to know a little more about the spectrum of ministry and backgrounds.

Would be interesting to survey for views on the continuation of tongues/other gifts in different scenarios.

Also question of whether the Holy Spirit communicates words to us beyond those of Scripture or communicates anything to us beyond that, etc.

I have some questions about reading habits, especially ancient language. Each of these questions could be broken down by some sort of demographic (lay person vs. church leader vs. pastor or some such thing). Obviously, I’m mostly interested in the church leaders and pastors. Any or all of these would be great.

1. Have you read through the Bible entirely?

2. Have you read through the Greek New Testament entirely?

3. Have you read through the entire Bible in its original languages?

4. How often do you read in Greek (looking up words in lexicons and concordances doesn’t count)? Daily, weekly, monthly, less than monthly

5. How often do you read in Hebrew (looking up words in lexicons and concordances doesn’t count)? Daily, weekly, monthly, less than monthly

6. Approximately how many non-fiction books do you read per year? 0-25, 25-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150+

7. Approximately what percentage of your reading is from authors outside your own theological perspective, however you consider that?

Cor meum tibi offero Domine prompte et sincere. ~ John Calvin

Yes, that would be interesting. I have recently begun to think that the reason we have a “writing shortage” in Fundamentalism is, in part, because we have a reading shortage. Not so much a failure to read enough (though I’m pretty sure that’s the case… myself included) but lack of skill in reading. Too few know how to read well, and it’s very hard to write a complex argument in such a way that poor readers can/will follow it.
