We have a bright comet coming next year several times brighter than the moon, so bright that authorities say it will be visible even during the day.

Global warming and strange weather patterns seem to be on the rise. Are these merely things that happen cyclically, or are they indicative of our nearing the end times?

What are your thoughts? The more perspectives, the better!

Oh Ed, have you been sucked into the global warning hype? Say it isn’t true.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

I think that the earth is warming, yes. I don’t believe that we can change that, and it may be that this is part of a long cycle which may give way to colder temperatures. But for now, it IS warming. It was 70 degrees in central Indiana Dec. 3, and the bad winters we used to have in the 80’s have given rise to much warmer ones. Them is the facts.

The problem is the diminutive length of time covered by data. Grape arbors flourished in England during the Roman rule, something impossible today because it is too cold - even after the current warming trend. You are old enough to remember scientists’ dire predictions in the 70’s of global cooling and the coming ice age. Notice no one talks about global warming anymore - that’s so passé. Instead, it is always climate change now.

Well, Chip, I am not necessarily disagreeing with you. All I am saying is that, for now, the weather is different from what it used to be. Those are the facts of which I speak.

The earth and sun go through cycles that are reflected in our weather patterns. In Ohio we’ve had some warm winters and some brutal winters in the last decade.

We know more about what is going on in the world today and we know it almost instantaneously. It gives us the feeling that more catastrophes happen today than in the past. IMO.

It is interesting that many in the US are saying that the weather was warmer this year, while many in Europe and Western Asia would be telling you this has been a cooler year. The UN says this may be in the top 10 of the warmest years (I did not waste my time looking into the time window they were looking at).

For me, it does appear that the weather is changing in my lifetime. But then I look back to my childhood and remember some awfully warm periods then as well (late 60s and early 70s). So, as Susan indicated, is this anything more than a cycle or is it something bigger? The world has gone through periods of extreme cold (the ‘little’ iceage) and periods of extreme heat (the demise of Egypt comes to mind). This results in me shrugging my shoulders when I think about this and I think that my short life is not long enough to come to any valid conclusion based solely on personal experience.

One question which I do have is why does the ‘end of times’ matter? It will happen when it happens. I have two choices, continue to live a Christian life or not in my day to day life. Whether it is the end of times or just an anomaly, it should not and, for me, does not matter. I have found this idea confusing and wonder why it matters since I have an obligation to try to live my life in the most Christian and least sinful manner I can at any given moment regardless of what may happen the next moment. I have to love our Father with all of my heart, all of my soul and all of my might as much and as often as I can (and it is definitely not as much as it should be). Again, this will not change from one moment to the next, other than my work at doing it better from one moment to the next.

Just a questions which has confused me as to why it is raised as often as it is.

Jim, for me, living in the Midwest, we have seen so many milder winters than we used to. The point, of course, is that we are referenced to our lifetimes or since statistics have been kept. As far as why it matters, any major historical event eats up our attention, as, for example, 911, So if we are nearing the end times, that idea breeds a certain kind of excitement (for want of a better term). I think behind this is the idea that our faith is vindicated and that God is in control. Although end time frenzies have given rise to numerous abuses and provide thrill-seekers with a diversion, there is something to be said about the Biblical teaching of “watching” and being expectant, as seen in Titus 2:13, for example:

looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
