Joe Biden "Fully Understands" China's One Child Policy
“But as I was talking to some of your leaders, you share a similar concern here in China. You have no safety net. Your policy has been one which I fully understand — I’m not second-guessing — of one child per family. The result being that you’re in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people. Not sustainable.”You can read the full remarks at the US Embassy’s website.John Boehner responds:“I’m deeply troubled by the comments reportedly made by the Vice President yesterday regarding China’s reprehensible one-child policy, which has resulted in forced sterilizations and coerced abortions and should not be condoned by any American official. No government on Earth has the authority to place quotas on the value of innocent human life, or to treat life as an economic commodity that can be regulated and taken away on a whim by the state. I hope and trust that the Vice President didn’t actually say what has been reported, and that a correction or clarification from the White House will be forthcoming. The Obama administration should be focusing on jobs for the American people, not encouraging foreign governments to utilize abortion as a means of population and deficit control.”
Biden has come out and http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/08/24/bidens-office-disputes-asser…] clarified his remarks :
Vice President Joe Biden’s office dismissed criticism of his seeming support of China’s one-child policy, saying Tuesday that the vice president’s recent remarks to a Chinese audience were meant to expose unintended pitfalls of the policy, not give approval to forced abortion.
“The Obama administration strongly opposes all aspects of China’s coercive birth limitation policies, including forced abortion and sterilization,” Biden spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said in a statement late Tuesday.
“The vice president believes such practices are repugnant. He also pointed out, in China, that the policy is, as a practical matter, unsustainable. He was arguing against the one-child policy to a Chinese audience,” Barkoff added.
Biden faced criticism this week after appearing to tell a crowd in China that he doesn’t have a problem with the country’s one-child policy.
"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells
