Having dealt with a number of mentally ill people, I agree that we need more authority to get them help (and supervision). It is almost impossible unless they commit a crime FIRST.

I understand our concerns about wrongly institutionalizing the sane, but, rather than erring on the side of not bothering the sane, we are allowing too many dangerous people on the streets. Rather than err either way, we really have to aim precisely for the middle of the target.
