"We've spent so much time and energy trying to be 'relevant' to teenagers that we've not given them the basics."
It is always astounding to me that teenagers begin learning complex mathematics by age 12-14 and by age 17 most have touched on calculus, those not compelled by math at these same ages can be found learning to master sciences which include earth science, biology and chemistry, or those not busy mastering these subjects can be found learning to operate computers, program computers and computer networking, as well another group can be found learning an extensive library of athletic strategies, developing instincts to recognize and counter athletic combatants and make decisions regarding the out come of complex offensive and defensive sets facing each other…add to that those who are busy apprenticing and mastering technical skills sets for automobile repair and rebuilding involving exacting calibrations, and with them teenagers operating automobiles, debating history, contemplating the future and their direction…yet when it comes to God’s Word and our indoctrination of them…we treat them, instruct them and place expectations upon them like 7 year olds. No wonder for many it is indeed just a big spiritual playhouse they depart once they are free. Blessed are the ministries that elevate their teaching and expectations of their teenagers out of respect for their genuine capacities.
