Atheist chaplains?

“Chaplain, over here! My buddy just lost a leg. The MedEvac choppers on it’s way in. Would you please give a Not Blessing?”

“Chaplain, can you think some kind thoughts about us before we go into battle.”

“Chaplain, before we bury him, can you say a few words about how we’ll never ever see him again, and he’s gone forever, leaving behind a bereaved wife and kids, and it’s all meaningless and for nothing. I believe it would greatly comfort everyone.”

Athiest chaplain, an oxymoron if ever there was one. Just thinking off the top of my head, it always amazed me that athiests always feel the need to band together and fight against something they believe is untrue, or to join forces in their unbelief. Is this an effort of non-believers to find comfort in one another as they reject the truth that they know they are going to be held accountable for as in Romans 1? Or is it an effort to find an anchor and meaning and purpose in the same way believers have them?
