Facing budget problems, some Twin Cities churches consider charging for Sunday school and other programs.

A Place to Pray … and Pay?

American churches began charging fees for weddings in the 1980s, said the Rev. John A. Mayer, director of City Vision, a consulting firm for about 900 churches.

Churches usually don’t charge for funerals, although a “recommended honorarium” is usually suggested. Summer Bible schools, too, require a fee.

Discussion

Can I get a refund for poor sermons?

Not to sound callous, but why don’t they just stop offering SS, or put aside some of their petty differences with another local church and merge? Or, use Toyota’s 5 Whys program to figure out why they are losing money. Obviously the economy plays a large role, but I don’t think that is the only reason.

Article with an interesting Mark Twain quote

http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/2000/05/Pay-Per-Pew-How-Come-People-Had…
As the story goes, Mark Twain once entered the church, wandered down the aisle, and took a seat in an empty pew. When the occupant of that pew arrived, the family crowded in with Twain. Soon Twain received a note from the head of the household. “Do you know how much I paid for this pew?” the man had written, with the figure in bold numbers. “You paid too d***** much,” Twain shot back.
