Pantheism has been Hollywood’s religion of choice for a generation!

“’Avatar’ is Cameron’s long apologia for pantheism — a faith that equates God with Nature, and calls humanity into religious communion with the natural world.” -Heaven and Nature

Even secular movie reviewers are rolling their eyes at the plot of the movie - bad humans! good natives! The movie will have a huge impact because of its production values, but I haven’t read one review that praised the story. Honestly, after taking 15 years to make his movie, you would think Cameron would have spent some of that time on a more nuanced story.

I confess, I still want to see the pretty pictures. ;)

(Off topic, I don’t know how you make your links open in a new window, Jim, but I sure appreciate it! :))

Ditto about the plot- I’m looking forward to watching the ‘behind the scenes’ footage, but definitely will not waste time on the movie itself. :)

Hard to understand why they would throw so much time and money into making a groundbreaking film and then stir in a plot from a boxed mix. What a waste!

Continuing the off-topic: Angela, in your html for a link just include target=”_blank” after the URL. Example below with spaces just inside the brackets so it will show.

I liked Avatar the first time I saw it… when it was “Dances with Wolves.” Kevin Costner’s name didn’t appear in the closing credits of “Avatar,” but it should have. The plot was nearly identical to the 1990 Costner flick. Pretty much, “Avatar” is “Dances with Wolves” plus some amazing special effects, a little post-Bush-era leftism, and a heavy dose of pantheistic creation-worship.

avatar was Dances with Wolves + The Last Samurai.

the Avatar concept was really creative and the special effects are out of sight. story - ultra predictable. Political undertones were also predictable: White imperialists - bad - natives who serve a female goddess and live in the trees - good.

One area was thought provoking in relation to religious activity. Watching the Na’vi people worship in weirdly exotic group chant/song/dance motion, i thought, wow what a bunch of wackos. Then i thought, i wonder what those who have never been involved in the church think about the things we do in our church services that may seem odd, i.e. “heads bowed/eyes closed”, drink small amounts of grape juice and eat smurf size wafers, dunk people under water, “come to the altar to get right with God”, etc. Hopefully church leaders will minister in the power of the Spirit and always communicate what is being done so people don’t leave thinking Christians are outlandish weirdos.
