Are American Evangelicals “Reinventing” Christianity?

There are two big questions here. First, our “high church” friends would challenge us on whether the Church Fathers are a representation of apostolic will, or whether it’s just history that we ought to evaluate in light of Scripture. Obviously I’m glad to be pretty much at the opposite end of the debate from the Catholics and Orthodox, but it’s a real debate we ought to be aware of and respect.

Second question is whether we have a tendency to enshrine our cultural habits as if they were Scripture—and of course most of the really fun debates here center around that very question, and those who know me don’t need me to repeat my views on that. Suffice it to say that it is my prayer that I will recognize the places where I fall into that tendency—and repent.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

Olson is my favorite Arminian for this type of thoughtful commentary.
