A 19-year-old at Virginia’s Liberty University has been identified as the student shot dead by a school police officer after allegedly attacking the officer with a hammer in an off-campus dormitory.

Joshua Hathaway from Lubbock, Texas, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning by a Liberty University Emergency Services officer in Lynchburg, WDBJ7 reported.

According to a search warrant obtained by the station, Hathaway told a security officer that he had been robbed and his vehicle stolen around 4 a.m.

During his report in the lobby of a “women’s-only” dormitory, he allegedly pulled a hammer out of his clothing and assaulted the officer.

After a brief struggle, the officer fired his weapon twice at Hathaway, hitting him at least once.
