A couple of years ago, I was on the phone for over an hour with the campus pastor of a mega-church in Atlanta that had performed Prince’s “Purple Rain” in their worship service. I had contacted the church and let them know that I was writing an article about it and would love to speak to whoever was in charge of the decision. After an hour of him trying to convince me that it was okay, he basically concluded that I was a legalist and he was not. The thing I found most interesting is that I didn’t really tell him what my position was. And I definitely didn’t argue with him. I was just looking for some quotes for the article. The line “methinks thou dost protest too much” ran through mind fairly often during that phone call.
