Over 1,800 United Methodists Launch Wesleyan Covenant Association to Promote Conservative Orthodoxy in Church
“The Wesleyan Covenant Association, a newly formed evangelical group of clergy and laity seeking to have the United Methodist Church go in a theologically conservative direction, held its inaugural one-day conference in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday.
I grew up Methodist, and am glad to see this. That said, if it’s just about allowing homosexuals in the pulpit and participating in same sex mirages, it’s going to fail. The evangelical wing of the UMC needs to seriously address other questions that the UMC has been misplacing since the 1960s, including whether women ought to fill the pulpit. If they don’t, they’re just going to be another example of the breakoff groups from the ELCA.
(for the uninitiated, many rural UMC churches are staffed by lay pastors of an evangelical bent….the denomination has been bleeding members and funding for so long, it’s virtually impossible to get a good stream of seminary graduates—yes generally theological liberals—to fill pulpits. I would guess that it is these churches that are sending representatives to Chicago)
Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
