The last article Wally linked to is reporting on a “speech from the throne,” something that is entirely the creation of the government of the day. She just reads it. It is the agenda of the government, it isn’t necessarily her own point of view.

Americans might sneer at the notion of a monarch who is so bound by history and custom so as to have no say in the direction her government takes. The American system is entirely different, so it is hard for people on either side to completely understand one another.

The value of the queen is not in these moments where she is bound by tradition and stated and unstated conventions. Rather it is in her enduring embodiment of the state. The nation may have competing parties, creating differing governments and political upheaval, but the state remains regardless, embodied by the crown.

We have no crisis when the queen dies, as we have in the system another to take her place and the life of the state continues on.

It isn’t a perfect system, but it has endured for hundreds of years in Britain and a good long time in the Queen’s other dominions, like Canada and Australia, etc.

I admire a lot about the American system, but I don’t dismiss the value of our constitutional monarchy.

As for the Queen’s personal views on this subject, who knows? It is not her place to get into politics and one shouldn’t read something into a speech from the throne. It doesn’t represent her ideas.

My take: Many Anglicans believe the gospel and are in Christ, despite doctrinal problems most of us would see in the Anglican distinctives. Many more have at least a Christian worldview, believing there is one true God who is judge of all the earth and to Whom we will all answer. The late Queen was at least one of the latter if not one of the former, and her openness about that was refreshing.
