I’m not going to offer advice but I think the guys who are even asking that question are going to, based on that attitude and discipline alone, do much better than the many who—as far as I can tell—are not considering that tension at all.

I’d argue that to go too deeply into progressive scholarship is a fool’s errand—you end up in a position where you’ve got to wade through some rather inpenetrable gobbledygook—but I do think it’s important to read enough of the progressives so we can state their position fairly.
