6 Statistics That Show How Much America Has Changed in a Half-Century
“Drawing on five decades of statistics, anecdotes, and other research, Murray sets out to make the case that America is, well, coming apart—economically, socially, and culturally.”
….is that marriage rates turned down, and illegitimacy rates turned up, about 1950, not 1963. Divorce rates spiked in the late 1940s, too. Part of this is understandable in light of “war brides” and “war grooms” realizing “act in haste, repent at leisure” is not just a proverb but a reality, but another part of it is that really, the sexual revolution was already underway, IMO. You can see it in how fashionable people are attired in ads in National Geographic. Bodice line drops, hem line comes up, etc..
You can also see it in popular films of the time, where the theme of the wayward boy won by the sweethearted girl is very prominent—what happens if that wayward boy returns to old habits is, of course, not really discussed.
