Gather It Up into a Memory

Joel Zartman: Sentimentality has always been one of the worst features of fundamentalism, and dwindling only makes it worse: it makes you cling to exhausted means because there is no power to distinguish these from ends. If it is over, I say, gather it up into memory. We live in an age of transition and many things are passing, good and bad, indifferent and decidedly mingled.

Just…AMEN. We try to use emotional blackmail to reach people for Christ, and we wonder then why they “leave Christ” as soon as the emotion fades. Sentimentalism is why we record gaudy “conversion” numbers in VBS, at county fair outreaches, and at Billy Graham crusades, and then we’re all puzzled why all those new brothers in Christ show up as empty pews.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
