Russell Moore under fire: "Russell Moore’s biggest problem is his mouth. He comes across as condescending—smug"
…is what this whole kerfuffle reminds me of. I would have hoped that we could all agree that our President is a man with many flaws and gross sins, and that his opponent is a woman with many flaws and gross sins, and that therefore we ought to have a bit of humility about what we hope to achieve in politics, but apparently no such luck.
Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
Moore used social media posts and opinion pieces he penned forThe Washington Post and The New York Times, both liberal news outlets, to attack evangelicals who voted for then-candidate Donald Trump, calling them at various times “drunk,” “doctrinally vacuous,” and the “Jimmy Swaggart wing” of evangelicals.

Sadly the Capstone Report article unfairly skews Russell Moore’s support of Gene Taylor. The article makes the assertion that one cannot vote democratic and support it party based on support of abortion and religious liberty. However, Gene Taylor (the person that Moore supported and voted for) has a 100% rating as a pro-life voter and a extremely strong supporter of religious liberty. However, the author goes after Moore for supporting Gene Taylor because Taylor (as a democrat) has voted for Pelosi and Schumer to lead the Democratic party. So basically we have 2nd degree separation going on with politics. According to their view, Moore isn’t qualified to serve in his position because he supported a politician that was affiliated with liberal politicians. The author even tried to make Taylor look even worse by mentioning that Taylor voted 82% of the time in step with Pelosi but doesn’t even mention in the article how pro-life and pro-religious liberty Taylor is. Its a complete hack job. Sadly, there are too many Southern Baptists that are so enamored and intoxicated by the possibility of power and influence. They feel that Moore is squandering a chance to utilize that White House power for their purposes. Maybe Moore realizes as Chuck Colson once said, “Power is like saltwater. The more you drink the thirstier you get.” With such a slanted view bent on taking strawman attacks on Moore, I am surprised that Sharper Iron even posted this article. Maybe Sharper Iron did to expose the idolatry of power of those who are trying to run Moore out.
The more I learn about Moore, the more I like him. The Capstone article in particular shows the true colors of his opposition. It starts by saying the problem is Moore’s mouth but very quickly, you learn what the problem is:
Dr. Moore is a Democrat. You cannot hold a rational Christian worldview and vote for Democratic candidates.
Yes, this is the cardinal sin among conservative evangelicals. They really can’t imagine that there really are more issues involved in politics than abortion. (Yes the author mentions religious freedom too but that is a crock. Conservative evangelicals do not want religious freedom; they want favored status for Christianity.)
Moore is criticized because he did not jump on the evangelical quack-of-the-month train and support Roy Moore and Kim Davis. Probably didn’t support Duck Dynasty and the Duggars either. May his tribe increase.
And then I started laughing when I saw this:
Attempts to spin this into a racial issue will fail because Southern Baptists aren’t racists.
Right….
I am in the south and I can assure you that while not every Southern Baptist is a racist, way way too many of them are. Anyone knows that that lives in the culture. It is especially true of the older generation that tends to give heavily to and run the churches. Those younger that know better in general give them grace because it is a blindspot and we all have them. But to deny that Southern Baptists have racial problems is absolutely absurd.
From what I’ve seen, Moore’s opponents are a spectrum of Christian Republican with nationalist inclinations, who like Trump’s populist appeal, and are dismayed because Moore is not a partisan apostle for The Donald.
Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.
I read the Capstone article and it cracked me up. The biggest issue that you have with Russell Moore is that he isn’t pro-Trump enough? Seriously?
Come back with something a little more substantial next time please!
