To be blunt about the matter, characterizing Carlson as "insane" or "demon-possessed" reminds me of the old KGB tactic of giving dissidents an appointment with a psychiatrist of flexible scruples to get them declared "insane".
What I think is going on here is very similar to what happened with Michelle Malkin; Carlson got an audience by saying a lot of the things standard conservatives believe, but people did not clue in to the fact that some of his views were way out there. For example, a college classmate characterized him as belonging to the "Dan White Society"--Dan White being the murderer of Harvey Milk. In other words, Carlson went beyond what all of us would affirm--that homosexuality is a sin--to some sort of endorsement of murder.
We saw the same thing, IMO, with Malkin when she defended the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War Two, and some of her college classmates noted that she seemed fairly radical then, too. She, like Carlson, has then gone on to work with guys like Nick Fuentes--not sure how that works with her (Jewish) husband Jesse.
So in a nutshell, what's going on is that some of these people have always been a little bit "out there" in terms of what they'll think and do, and then events work together to reveal what was always under the surface. What we have, then, is a reality that somehow, we want to spot some of these tendencies early and either help people to repent of them, or hit the "switch" that will shunt them off to a side track before they do a lot of damage. Sadly, that's more easily said than done.
