Wayne Grudem: Trump should drop out of the 2024 presidential race to “preserve his legacy”

“if he drops out now, Trump will also be remembered as the ex-president who, with commendable humility, put the good of the country ahead of his own personal ambition and withdrew from the race” - Current

Discussion

On theology, I agree with Grudem on a lot of things. On Donald Trump, less so, but his list of reasons Trump should quit is mostly good.

The really solid point: He should stop running for President.

But “humility”? There is little evidence that he has any of that or even believes he should, or that anyone should. Hopefully he finds other motives for dropping out. I continue to pray.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

Why would Trump drop out of the race? Humility? Love of country? That's hilarious.

He's leading the Republic candidates by wide margins in every state. Even if convicted of any of the current charges against him, evangelicals will continue to support him. Trump will appeal any conviction. By the time the courts hear the appeal, he may be president again, and it will be a moot point.

So, short of a health emergency, Trump's in it to win it.

Legacy?

I mostly agree on the previous post, but perhaps for different reasons. Given that the legacies of genuine giants from this country’s past are torn down all the time, and have accelerated since 2020, I think “legacy” is the last thing that Trump or any other presidential candidate (or anyone else for that matter) should think about. Do what you believe to be right, and history will make its judgment all on its own, and you have absolutely no control over it. Evaluation by the one true judge is all that matters.
