I’ve read through most of these reviews -great job all around.
What isn’t surprising, but should be, is that lay people often don’t have enough spiritual discernment to see some of these teachings as heresy right out of the box. It all sounds so nice, so humble, so Boy-Next-Door-Aw-Shucks-Ma’am. But scratch off the candy coating - yikes.
People who aren’t in the Word but read books about the Word are likely to swallow any fish that comes downstream.

I have to admit that I’m really not surprised.
One of the hallmarks of the Emergent movement [if it is still a coherent movement] was that it refused to be dogmatic on just about any topic or doctrine. So for it to have degenerated to a list of “what a person does that makes them feel spiritual” and an attitude of ‘We’ll all just love Jesus’ was just a logical endpoint of their charted path. How much longer until Brian gives up on the “Jesus of his understanding” [to borrow loosely from David McCullagh] entirely?

"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells
