Pope practiced flagellation as a means of self-mortification

Book: John Paul II used belt to whip himself

As some members of his close entourage in Poland and in the Vatican were able to hear with their own ears, John Paul flagellated himself. In his armoire, amid all the vestments and hanging on a hanger, was a belt which he used as a whip.

Discussion

Is the purpose of this filing to show that flagellation is an old Catholic practice or that John Paul was heard doing so by others? Or just a reminder that such a practice is totally antithetical to the doctrine of grace?

As a teenager I was fascinated by the novel THE NUN’S STORY (also a movie). Flagellation was part of the routine that the nuns had to go through weekly. I would imagine that there are still orders that perform this.

I suppose in some cases that they may be of interest to no one! :)

Colossians 2:20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
