What We Gained When We Lost Our Hymnals
Challies also has a companion piece on what was lost when hymnals were largely abandoned. Now I’m all for people learning to sing parts, and I’d love to see more discernment (and more blues) in the modern songs we sing, but his points are well taken. Definitely worth a read.

Does anyone have any resource recommendations for power point/ projector songs. I would love to have a program that someone could just type in a song title, have the computer project the song over the speakers and put the lyrics on the screen.
We use an open source app called OpenLP for our services. Every part of the service is modular, so you can add songs with just a click, and they are formatted automatically according to your chosen theme. It also imports Scripture, images, video, and power point presentations. I’ve found it very helpful.
There are other apps out there, but we chose this one for its versatility and price (free).

We project with http://digitalsongsandhymns.com, which includes the notation. It does cost, but it’s worth it.
Don’t know about the replacing of instruments, which is what I am envisioning when you talk of speakers. We’ve never been in a position where that was necessary.

Have you ever looked at http://www.lifewayworship.com/ ? They have Powerpoint files, audio, key changes, orchestral arrangements, chord charts… might serve what you’re looking for. It is a paid service, but might meet what you describe.

I just had a creative idea as I was looking at some of the recommended resources. We already have a “Gloria Hymn Player.” It is basically a church orchestra in a box. There is a large Hymn book that comes with it and you simply type the hymn number into the device and it plays the instrumentals. You can adjust the tempo and do many other things that I have not even figured out yet. The challenge is that it does not match our other hymnals so we have to cross reference numbers all the time. We also have a projector and a large screen. Perhaps we could just open our hymnal and set up a camera to project the page we want onto the screen as we play that selection. Then we would have the benefits of both the hymnal and the projector. If we wanted to add some songs that were not in our Gloria Hymnal, we could use the Lifeway resource Greg recommended. I am not sure how well this would work, but I am just brainstorming today.
‘ProPresenter’ by RenewedVision will do that as well, but I believe it requires a CCLI / SongSelect subscription, and ProPresenter is probably overkill for what most churches need. The church I attend is large, and we’re using it but it is a complex piece of software. I’m one of the (volunteer) technical leads and I’m learning it now. Also, I would imagine that Faithlife’s Proclaim software will do something similar, but I’ve never used it.

I’m no techie, so I usually steer clear of that aspect of our services, but on Saturday afternoon, before our Saturday evening service, I made my way back to our production room to ask what software we use. (This thread piqued my curiosity.)
Sydney, one of our volunteers & an 18 year old tech wiz, who I happened to teach in 1st grade Sunday School, gave me a primer on how it operates. She geared her demonstration down to my level of technical (in)competence…..
