“There is the influence of the voodoo religion, which spreads the message that life is capricious and planning futile”
I went to Haiti on a mission trip when I was in college. We heard the voodoo at night, while sitting on the veranda of our hotel in Cap Haitien. We tried to hold open-air meetings in a town that was known to be a bastion of voodooism. The satanic oppression was palpable in that town and in that country.
Cultures that forsake God go backwards. That’s why certain places in southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America are populated with tribes who are culturally very backward and remote, some to the extent of cannibalism - these people are the descendants of the major Indian cultures that forgot God and chose such satanic practices as human sacrifice and much more.
(An aside: Costa Rica is a much more stable country without the coups and turmoil of its neighbors. One of the major reasons for this is considered to be that it was originally settled with men who brought their families, and were thus more stable and moral, than the surrounding countries which were populated with single swashbucklers for whom morality was a non-consideration. I read this in a secular textbook.)
While I think that someone like Pat Robertson is very unwise to proclaim a reason for why God allowed the earthquake to hit Haiti, at the same time there is truth to the fact that voodooism and satanic influence have done their work in that country. Lack of economic development, followed by inability for other countries to help them, results from this. As with many things, the spiritual foundations can’t be ignored.

Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34Obviously there is no perfectly righteous nation. But if I understand Proverbs 14:34, there is a sense where the aggregate righteousness of a nation blesses that nation. And where paganism is a curse upon a nation.
