Bill Gothard defends himself on new website

who should only be corrected or advised by God.” I say bunk.

While I have no problem with a “chain of command”, I spent four years in the Coast Guard before I went to a seminar. From that time, I learned while the husband is the captain of the ship, good captains have good executive officers (XO). Captains are held ultimately responsible for what aboard his ship. If he’s in his cabin when the ship goes aground at Zero Dark Thirty, he loses his command, will spend the rest of his career ashore and be passed over for promotion.

My wife has been a good XO, finance officer and Russian cultural specialist. I retain command authority. But, there’s a lot of stuff I’ve delegated to her. I could not have proper ministry with the Russian speaking EC-B community without her advice.

Hoping to shed more light than heat..

I was reading on another blog I follow—the Bayly Brothers’ site—and they note that their father was approached by some of Gothard’s board back in the seventies about the situation with Steve Gothard and more. I was incredulous that they didn’t simply collect the evidence, present it to the full board, and lay down the law—saying that if the board didn’t do the right thing and expel Steve/discipline Bill, they’d make the issues as public as they could.

But they didn’t. Numerous people did try back then, but they weren’t the insiders that needed to speak up with unimpeachable authority. Somehow the guys that really needed to speak up were induced to remain silent. I don’t know what the reasons were, but it strikes me that the wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

You might be lucky—Gothard’s ideas might not have penetrated into your circles, but it strikes me that we’ve got to keep our eyes open for the rot that can so quickly damage us.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
