New BJU President

I guess I must not have any idea what it takes to be a college president. I would have assumed an educator, but these colleges keep reeling in the evangelists (Maranatha did the same thing). Guess what they really want is someone with a lot of connections and plenty of juice to keep the enrollment and donations coming in. I have been appreciative of many decision BJ has made over the last 5-10 years and the direction they have been headed, but this is a disappointment for a number of reasons.
Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?
Chip,
I agree Chip. I’m praying for the School, but there was another person on the short list that would have been better, IMO.
Roger Carlson, PastorBerean Baptist Church
Yes, I was pretty surprised at this move myself. I figured it would be someone with education experience (Sam Horn? Kevin Bauder?), but Steve Pettit was someone I never would have expected. I hope everything works out for the school - and I am sure they’ll be fine. They have a solid Board to help, and a lot of the administrators, I’m sure, will be very supportive.

sometimes being Prez is mostly about fundraising, connections, people skills … Deans and others can take care of the academic stuff
:D
I personally would have liked to have seen a pastor or someone with pastoral experience (but why should anyone care what I think), but the president of BJU is someone who is going to be representing the school in church conference settings and public relation kind of venues. There are other positions where the educators and administrators will have their influence, but BJU needs the support of churches if it is going to maintain and build relationships with churches and attract students. Pettit was probably about as good a choice as any they could have made for that.

Marshall, MN
is the current President of the University of California system. She doesn’t have a lick of teaching or academic administrative experience, that I can see.
Hoping to shed more light than heat..
Those people who were concerned that BJU was going to undergo radical changes needn’t worry. Other than no Vespers, no opera, and only one Shakespeare play next year, things will remain the same.
"Some things are of that nature as to make one's fancy chuckle, while his heart doth ache." John Bunyan
No opera?! The slippery slope has begun…
