On Turning 40(link is external)

Discussion

Obviously it is a given that life is more than material things! “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

But if one is 40 and hasn’t started investing, now is the time!

PV= Present Value

FV= Future Value

Where could one get an 8% return … SPY(link is external) (The mother of all ETFs that invests in the whole S&P 500!)

And … should have started at 30

Wow! It would be nice to have $1,000 a month laying around to invest. Sadly, my wife and I had to chose between investing in our personal future and investing in our kid’s futures. Living on a single income so she can be at home with our kids just doesn’t leave much discretionary income.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

When I started to go bald. I was in my late 30’s but before 40 and pastoring a church.

The chairman of our deacons gave me a VHS cassette and said “I want you to view this”. There was no label on the cassette.

I put it aside for a while and the next time I saw him, he asked if I had viewed it yet. I said “no, not yet” and asked what it was about. He said “something you need to see”

That night after the kids went to bed, my wife and I viewed it.

It was an advertisement (more like an infomercial because it wasn’t short) for Rogaine(link is external)

I really had to laugh. My Dad (who as alive then) was a complete cue-ball. I knew early on what my fate would be. And I didn’t care!

Hopefully Beanie sees this! We can relate

I’m not bald! It’s a solar panel for a genius!

Being a resident of Geezerville for 26 years, I’ll confess that the effects so many birthday cakes sometimes gets to me but the assets of age outweigh the liabilities. After 30 plus years in “full-time Christian service, the Lord’s been good in providing me with a secular job that meets our material needs and a new ministry in a growing church of wonderful people, mots of whom are young enough to be my children. I’m happy as an elder and “pastor to the pastors” as well as being the oldest “worship leader” I know. I thank God I’m happier now than when I was forty!

Fellow baldy here… started in my late twenties, I’ve taken things into my own hands now… at least I can say that I’m completely bald because I choose to be… :) Also, be careful “suggesting” specific ETF’s in a forum like this, especially if you are not registered… MANY different things that need to be taken into consideration. With that said, make sure you start planning early and encourage your children to do the same. Set the example. Don’t listen to those people that say you are “gambling” or not trusting the Lord by doing it. A well planned and managed retirement program has very little “gamble” in it.

Geezerville?? Lots of 40-year olds are just beginning to grow in their career, and won’t peak for another 10-15 years. Lots of people in history just got going in their greatest work in life at age 40 (example: Bill Bright). No, you can’t run the 100 m. dash like you did at 20, but people who have invested their life well are usually a lot smarter at 40 than they were at 20 or 30, and their ability to think through things and plan is usually functioning at its best. If you are walking with the Lord, the greatest spiritual discoveries are still to come, and the greatest spiritual impact of your life is still to come.

As a 73 year old I have noticed four things about my fellow Geezerville residents:

1. They like to reminisce about the good ole days

2. Their bodies can forecast the weather

3. They eat fig newtons and wash them down with prune juice

4 Give me a few minutes to recall this one

Had to chuckle at number 4

At 65, I still enjoy living in Geezerville. I still love to spend time, alot of it in the Holy Scriptures which live and abide forever. Prayer and my hobbies.

I cannot get old because I still love IndCar racing, like Nascar. Plalystation where my Detroit LIons and Tigers win. I love online IndyCar racing and preaching.

I love to preach and teach the Holy Scriptures and quite frankly, I do get a blessing from being considered old fashioned when I know the younger set is totally out

to lunch when it comes to common sense as to ministry work. I am hopeful they stick with it long enough to become molded and mature. I simply cannot be intimidated

by the younger crowd because I spend time with my Eternal Lord and realize only God is AWESOME. Stupid how that word floats so easily as if we had anything to do with it.

It strikes me that marriage goes through phases w age:

  • The newliwed … adjustment phase
  • The normal before children
  • The first child and major adjustments
  • The long “having a family” phase - could be 25-30 years
  • The first child leaves … an adjustment
  • The last child leaves … empty nest commences

We are in 40th year of marriage. Empty nesters for 11 years. All kids working and productive members of society

It ain’t all bad!
