Free Internet Content Filtering From OpenDNS

Forum category

I just started using this service:

http://www.opendns.com/

They offer among other things a web content filtering service at no expense to the household user. I like it because of 1.) the cost (free), and 2.) because you can filter at the router level, which is becoming more and more important with the influx of wireless devices that can come into a home. You are able to adjust the content filtering at several levels:

High

Protects against all adult-related sites, illegal activity, social networking sites, video sharing sites, and general time-wasters.

Moderate

Protects against all adult-related sites and illegal activity.

Low

Protects against pornography and phishing.

Minimal

Protects against phishing attacks.

None

Nothing blocked.

If one is concerned with accountability (turning filter on and off) , I would say that a good solution might be to password protect the router or computer in such a way where the information cannot be changed without that password. If you are concerned about preventing your own opportunity to stumble, just make sure someone else than yourself sets the password.

Anyway, thought it was worthwhile to pass on. Filters don’t solve everything, but they certainly can be part of good internet management and accountability- and this is one that anyone should be able to afford.

Discussion

I’ve been using OpenDNS for awhile, and it works great. I also use SafeEyes as a filter for my kids’ laptops.
