David Attenborough: "it is irresponsible to have large families in this day and age"

Sadly many Christians agree with this kind of thinking. Once couples get their 1 or 2 children, it is time to shut off blessings from God.

1 Kings 8:60 - so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

So, those of us who have only 1 or 2 children are shutting off blessings?

What’s sad is that line of thinking.

Easton, did you even read what I said? That was bad.

1 Kings 8:60 - so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

“Sadly many Christians agree with this kind of thinking. Once couples get their 1 or 2 children, it is time to shut off blessings from God.”

Yep. There it is. Read every word.

Here’s why I think your statement is sad:

You took the statement and views of a total nut (Attenborough) and used it to criticize fellow Christians who choose (occasionally it’s not a choice) not to have more than one or two offspring. Why would you do that? Why would you be critical of believers who make an allowable choice not to have more than one or two kids?

If anything all he’s guilty of is being too terse.

Hoping to shed more light than heat..

Easton…

It is sad that many Christians would agree with Sir David Attenborough that large families are bad for society/the earth. Some Christians do actually believe this. Their attitude is that if they even have kids, it is to have their 1 or 2. Their culturally, rather than biblically, informed view is that a large family would be bad. Was that so hard? Is that really a condemnation of everyone with 1 or 2 kids?

Now I hope we can move past this incident.

1 Kings 8:60 - so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

“…many Christians would agree with Sir David Attenborough…”

There you go again…

Where are you getting this stat? How do you come to the conclusion that “many” Christians agree with a buffoon like Attenborough?

“…culturally, rather than biblically, informed view…”

And there it is again. A small(er) family is not “biblical”, i.e., blessings are “cut off”.

Unbelievable.

Easton, I am not familiar with the circles you run in, so maybe your ignorance of this matter is not intentional.

http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2010/briefs/c2010br-14. shows a percentage actually on the decline.

I know many believers personally who have opted for the 1 or 2 and done mentality, some even avoid kids altogether so they can “have fun young” and other options. I have heard other “believers” bemoan the idea of larger families. When asked what a larger family is, I have heard anything more than 2, maybe 3.

If you are really convinced of some nonexistent data that shows a majority of Christians having larger families, then so be it. In the major population areas of developed society where such information could be tracked though, it just isn’t so. I won’t argue with phantom notions.

As to the second point, you seem clearly put off at this. I am not sure why. Children are a blessing from God right? Are children ever the sign of a curse? So if a couple shuts off reproductive capabilities, they are cutting off blessings from God. As you say, that is your choice. I am sure the additional trips going out to eat are equivalent blessings. Of course this offends people. Your cultural view is not biblically informed. Disagree? Show me where I am wrong.

1 Kings 8:60 - so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

It is the pure, unadulterated arrogance and condescension of your statements that astound me. There is no humility in your words, instead you use the burbles of a lunatic (Attenborough) to criticize fellow Christians who, in the light of scripture & in the eyes of God, have done absolutely nothing wrong.

“As you say, that is your choice. I am sure the additional trips going out to eat are equivalent blessings.”

Let me understand your “reasoning” — Christians who have smaller families do so in order to eat out more.

Right.

“Of course this offends people.”

And you enjoy that part, don’t you?

I guess that’s one thing you and Attenborough have in common.
