Never heard of the show until a month or so ago. Can’t see what all the facination’s about. Disappointed with the deplorable misuse of God’s Word in the article by someone who appears to be sincere (statements about John 3:17). Afraid too many believers will latch on to this show as the next great bulwark of Christianity in America.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

Chip, I would encourage you to watch the first “related video” at the bottom of the article where Phil Robertson shares the Gospel.

Why do I love the show and the Robertsons? Not because I see them as the next great bulwark of Christianity in America. Not because I necessarily agree with them 100% doctrinally (they are Church of Christ). But because the show is good, clean fun that you can’t hardly help but watch with a smile on your face. And at the end of the show, when the entire family gathers together for dinner and Phil leads them in prayer in Jesus’ name, you walk away from the show feeling happy and uplifted about faith and family rather than depressed or needing a shower like so much that’s on TV these days. Oh, and they are certainly using the platform the Lord has given them for spiritual purposes as they share their faith with everyone who will listen.

I’ve seen the show a few times and find it entertaining but the last time I checked the Church of Christ held to the doctrine of baptismal regeneration which leads me to conclude that the gospel they promote is not the Biblical gospel.

"Some things are of that nature as to make one's fancy chuckle, while his heart doth ache." John Bunyan

I used to like the show. Now it feels like professional wrestling. In other words, it is so absurdly fake that I can’t get past it. I really don’t consider it that clean either. There are constant references to sex that make me pause before letting my children watch it.

I too sort of wonder what this says about Christianity in America when Chrisitians are gaga over the Robertsons. But then again, last week they were gaga over Tebow so it is to be expected. Just seems like Christians really need their celebrities.

Yes, it’s “scripted reality.” I get it. Not sure who would think that all this stuff really happens to one family.

As far as the “constant references to sex,”…not sure we’re watching the same show. Yes, Phil has taken several opportunities to warn his grandchildren about the dangers of premarital sex. Yes, there are some “wink-wink” references to the sexual lives of the married couples on the show that most children wouldn’t understand, but nothing explicit. And honestly, I don’t mind my children hearing married couples joke around with each other (in very mild ways), because that’s exactly what I’m teaching them—God created sex for married couples to enjoy with one another. The point is, marriage is uplifted and honored in this show, as you can see from this clip from the first episode of season four: http://www.aetv.com/duck-dynasty/video/phil-and-miss-kay-renew-their-vo…

As far as being “gaga” over the Robertsons…perhaps some people are. I just like watching the show, and I appreciate that they take opportunities to publicly share their faith. That’s all.

I’ve never actually watched a full episode, but I do think it is hilarious. Yes, I know it is scripted reality and I know the Robertsons may not believe and practice the same way as I do.

But, I don’t expect them to be either, and this is my point. I don’t, nor should any of us expect them to be the end all to straight-down-the-line Biblical living and doctrine.

It is refreshing to see a family who is not ashamed of their Biblical faith, that is extremely popular right now, and practices solid family values. Other, so called, “Christians” in reality shows have not exemplified the same. Kate Gosselin anyone?

I think it is an overstatement to say Christians “need” their celebrities. I don’t think we “need” them, just that it again is refreshing to see someone who is a solid Christian do well in the public eye.

Duck Dynasty is just an entertainment show that the Robertsons regularly use as a means to share their faith.

Just for the record, my comments were not directed at Greg Long but at American Christianity in general. Sorry for not being clearer in my original post.

I may be overspeaking on “constant references to sex.” That being said, there seems to be a joke or two (mainly from Phil) in many episodes. One episode involved buying a bed and it was not so good.

I certainly would not deny that the show is better than most. The question I guess is whether that is the best we can do. If we need celebrity heroes, how about some that act like intelligent adults? Laziness and stupidity is sort of glorified on that show and the sad part is, I am relatively sure that the Robertsons are much better than that in real life. I would like the show a lot better if it portrayed the real Robertsons—the hardworking, intelligent ones that built a successful business over decades.

Ya know, GregH, in a way we probably are getting the real Robertsons. They have enough savvy to overplay the hick role for the paychecks offered from the show. Just can’t seem to work up any energy to care about watching.
