"Those who are interested in 'classical' fundamentalism should note Dixon’s [first editor of The Fundamentals] view of the theater. "
Brother Dixon is really ringing the changes. In his opinion, the whole BJU, MBBC, et al. drama (stage and screen) departments ought to be shut down.

It is interesting how many Christians condemned the theater when it taught virtue, and now embrace it when it teaches vice.

Ahh, but I do not think you are talking about the same Christians, are you?
As the quantity of communication increases, so does its quality decline; and the most important sign of this is that it is no longer acceptable to say so.--RScruton

No, indeed. Not the same Christians, but often their children, and sometimes the same groups.
“You cannot ally yourself with the good without also being allied to the evil, for on the stage the good and the evil are in close alliance.”
Using this guide, any form of entertainment or amusement would be considered off-limits for a true fundamentalist.
(Wish I would’ve had this quote when I was forced to attend Vespers and Artist Series at BJU.)
And politics - certainly Christians should avoid politics at all cost — for where is good and evil in more “close alliance” than on the political stage?
This is a good article about Dixon by Priest:
Evangelist Sam Jones (1847-1906):
The enemies of Christianity are those who indulge in, or condone, dancing, card-playing, gambling, circuses, swearing, theater-going, billiards, baseball, low-cut dresses, society balls, novel reading, social climbing, and above all else, drinking alcoholic beverages.
Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.
No Baseball? That’s just un-American. “Baseball, Chevrolet, an Apple Pie” is as wholesome as you get.
Circuses? That’s probably circumlocution for Washington D.C.
Pastor Mike Harding
Why circuses are on that list myself. Cruelty to animals, maybe?
"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells

The history of circuses is fascinating. Not a good culture and it was abusive to employees as well as animals.
It’s the clowns
hundreds circuses crisscrossed the country. It wasn’t like today with only Barnum and Bailey.
