If you could recommend only one book to someone serious about their walk with Christ, what would it be?
Not including any of the 66 books in the Bible….

On any subject? Man that is pretty tough. Maybe a systematic theology then. I liked Chafer but now am really enjoying Mclune.

You know, I apparently need that translated into todays english because if i’m remembering it correctly, i had a hard time. My father in law got me a set of books that included some classics like that and some were just difficult to read.
But I did watch the cartoon…..does that count?

Chafer’s a good call. Got that set. Good stuff, but it also does help me sleep, too. I am unfamiliar with Mccune, assuming I googled the right guy. What perspective does he write from?
How People Change, by Paul Tripp. Great book on sanctification. I learned a lot from it.

I tried about 4 or so of the study guides and handouts and it was a dead link on the site. That pesky website manager must have deleted them or moved them. I can say that with full immunity because I manage our church site…..and I’ve been known to lose things.
John Piper’s book “Desiring God” was very, very helpful to me personally, although it is not easy reading.
Don, what about the Children’s illustrated classic edition - the kind with text on one side and pencil illustrations on the opposite page? Do they count? I read that edition many years ago. :-)

[dwayne]He is a professor (used to be?) at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an independent fundamental baptist. He is seperatistic and dispensational. So far I would place him more towards the reformed perspective on soteriology and sanctification than say Chafer but he doesn’t seem to take quite as strong a position as some. I recommend “A Systematic Theology of Biblical Christianity” (3 vols.) by Rolland McCune.

However, given the specific challenges of our day, were I or anyone else limited to one book beyond the Bible, I would want it to be something that specifically challenged and helped the reader to know and love God. Consider making that one book The Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer. This work stands out for Tozer’s effort, not merely to restate the orthodox position on the various attributes of God, but also to present practical implications of those attributes for life and worship.
But then, the reader will want help in implementing these ideas, for which a good book of Christian poetry is invaluable. Get Tozer’s The Christian Book of Mystical Verse.
And do get Pilgrim’s Progress, too.

Looks like a good study .. all worked out .. LONG .. but it should be interesting!! I didn’t much understand Pilgrim’s Progress when I was young … “got” bits and pieces - but didn’t LOVE it .. laugh.. it is cumbersome.. this looks like it breaks it down and makes it clear!
