Autopsy of a Deceased Church: 11 Things I Learned

I have enjoyed reading this thoughtful Southern Baptist for many years. His comments in the article give me much food for thought.

“I’m not filling out this form,” and the deacon storms out of the room and goes home.

Two elderly deacons fall asleep during the consultant’s presentation.

“We’re not going to pay your mileage (to a consultant who traveled from an adjacent state to make a presentation), nor will we hire you.”

Please remind me to never become a church consultant!

I have seen this process too many times in local churches that lose their purpose for existing. It is possible for a church to be so inward focused that it loses its ability to relate to the community around it. A church can also be so outward focused that it fails to edify and build up the believers in its own body. There really has to be a balance. Thanks for posting this article. It was a blessing.

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
