Other observation: Yet another poorly defined term - “neo-fundamentalism”

I suggest that “neo*” should be retired as an overused, overwrought, indistinct, pejorative prefix. (along with pseudo-)

There was a much higher and fairer motivation behind historic fundamentalism than a remnant mentality. I believe such a description lacks perspective. It may be true in some sect of fundamentalism but not on the whole. As to the neo-fundamentalist group I certainly would avoid the term fundamentalist with any prefix or suffix for some and do not see a remnamt mentality as their primary drive seeing that most named accept very broad associations and theology.

The use here of “neo-fundamentalism” is for the most part what I have tagged in the past as “Type C fundamentalism.” These are the conservative evangelicals who are militant and will stand for and even against in the context of the evangelical movement as a whole. While I might view a few minor points differently, I think the article reflects what’s there with the Type C’s. Enjoyable read.

I think it was George Marsden who joked that if you go to Calvin College and ask them, “Are you Fundamentalists?” they’ll say, “Oh no, you have to go to Wheaton to find them.” If you go to Wheaton and ask them the same, they’ll say, “Oh no, you have to go to Moody for that.” If you go to Moody and ask them the same, they’ll say, “Oh no, you have to go to Bob Jones for that.” And if you go to Bob Jones and ask them, they’ll so, “Oh yes we are, and …” (I forget the last part of the punch line).
