Joni Eareckson Tada weighs in on Alzheimers and Divorce

“When a Christian leader views marriage on a sliding scale, what does this say to the millions of couples who must deal daily with catastrophic injuries and illnesses?” “At the Joni and Friends International Disability Center, we encounter thousands of couples who, despite living with serious disabling conditions, showcase the grace of God in their weakness every day. Marriage is designed to be a picture of God’s sacrificial love for us. Alzheimer’s disease is never an ‘accident’ in a marriage; it falls under the purview of God’s sovereignty. In the case of someone with Alzheimer’s, this means God’s unconditional and sacrificial love has an opportunity to be even more gloriously displayed in a life together!” Joni Eareckson Tada weighs in on Pat Robertson’s endorsement of divorce from Tuesday, Sept. 13 Previous Filing - Pat Robertson Advises Man to Divorce Wife With Alzheimer’s

I just can’t believed PR verbalized that. My jaw dropped. It’s not only an embarrassment to the church, it’s a disgrace to the name of Jesus.

Mathew Sims

Robertson’s friend was in an adulterous relationship. Rather than encouraging him to end that relationship, his advice was to divorce the wife and marry the woman, so he could continue the relationship albeit as a married man.

If such is true, then the entire premise of his statement was based not on what was right, but what would make his friend happy. In a way I’m glad he made the statement because of the opportunity it provided for church leaders to respond so forcefully (in a negative way) to his view of the Gospel.

I’m appalled …

One point - I THINK that the advice he was giving is in response to a viewers letter .. the VIEWER’s friend was the one who has the wife with Alzheimers..

I always believe that we should respect each others belief if we wanted to be respected. The latest online issue of Molecular Psychiatry contains a brand new study that indicates that Alzheimer’s disease may actually result from an infection. As an infection, Alzheimer’s may also be contagious. Such has been the suit in studies with mice. I read this here: http://www.newsytype.com/12372-alzheimers-disease-contagious/ Alzheimer’s disease may be contagious, study suggests .

ArloC,

Respect is admirable as long as it doesn’t call for violation of Scripture. That’s the issue here.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?
