I had the privilege of taking a Baptist History class taught by Dr. Cummins in 2002. His teaching presented a thorough, profound look at Baptist beliefs, movements, and personalities in America and abroad. No one could say things quite like Dr. Cummins. He believed that “preachers should be word merchants,” and he modeled that ideal impeccably, both in the classroom and in the pulpit. His Baptist conviction, missionary vision, and deep passion for God made an indelible impression on my life. He will be missed greatly.

When I went away to a less-than-scholarly Bible College in 1980, my church changed pastors to Dr. Cummins. For about a year after my return, I worked under him as a youth pastor, and later spent many hours talking to him when I was home from the various colleges I attended.
Years have passed, and I am evolved into something that Dr. Cummins would not greatly have appreciated. I pastor a Bible church instead of a Baptist church. My church does not use the KJV exclusively (though Dr. Cummins’ loyalty to the KJV was not doctrinal so much as practical), I have little use for the preaching of extra-Biblical standards, and I move in entirely different circles than he did.
But I still remember that when I came home from a Bible College that did not instill good and deep study, it was Dr. Cummins who made sure that I read, studied, and understood all the important books and prepared myself as a serious student of God’s Word. He gave me books from his extensive library – some that were rare and out-of-print – that were considered the definitive within their fields at the time. Some were first editions.
Despite the differences in our approach to ministry or ideas, I will be forever grateful to him for starting me on the road to being a serious student of God’s Word and a doctrinal rather than frivolous preacher.
