Street Preaching Methods

Forum category
I have been having thoughts on trying to balance out my street preaching style and method. Currently my method models that of the old fashioned Fundamentalist. However Ray Comfort of Way of the Master and his followers have challenged me a little. Ray Comfort adapts a teaching/preaching approach where he uses signs, bill boards, passes out money, and uses other tactics to get the crowds attention and to speak on their level. I have noticed that people are far more responsive to this method of street preaching, verses the old fashioned evangelistic style. The style I adapt was popular among Fundamentalist like Billy Sunday, John Straton, and many others, but is not so common in today’s day. My first experience of a street preacher was in 2001 when I heard some pastor of a church with a megaphone just preaching the word of God in a park. I liked how he did not compromise, did not water down the truth, and just boldly preached hellfire, sin, condemnation, and most importantly Christ and redemption. As I listened to this street preacher on that hot summer day in 2001 I dreamed of one day being a street preacher. Some years past and I have been street preaching for 2 years know. I have preached many times, have been on the news, and have had many watch me. But I have to wonder if this method has been the most effective.

Any ideas on street preaching? Thanks..

I believe that the biblical and socially acceptable approach is to go someplace and draw a crowd of people who might actually want to engage you or hear what you have to say in contrast to going out, finding a crowd, and rudely IMPOSING yourself on them!

Have done some study on the history of Street Preaching myself and I believe this is what the old-time street preachers did - did things to draw a crowd (music, skits, Etc.). They did not berate passers-by or yell at stopped cars at an intersection (air-conditioned cars with the windows up, A/C on, and the stereo turned up).

With that, I do believe that Ray Comfort has some really great ideas and methods! I also like the way he engages - talks to and with people in a courteous and respectful manner rather than preaching (yelling) AT them. For some reason, I see the Apostle Paul being a whole lot more like Ray Comfort and not at all like a “Ruckmanite” PBI Graduate during his discourse on Mars Hill in the book of Acts.

And I do not believe Ray Comfort compromises the Gospel message in the least!

Can you name some of his methods for drawing a crowd? Thanks..

Proverbs tells us that pleasant speak increases persuasiveness. I like evangelists that are bold yet not surly.

God gives some speakers a keen sense of humor which can also be used to advantage. Go with what works. Cardinal doctrines are set in stone, IMO methods may change over time as God leads.

Can you be a little more specific regarding what you are asking for?
