Simple Fixes- please try these first

If you are having trouble logging into this site, or you are not seeing updated content, don’t panic. You have not been banned. We are not charging a membership fee for access. There are no Fornits clogging up your keyboard with Cheetos and peanut butter.

What is probably happening is that you need to clear your cache, or update your OS (operating system) or browser. Here are some simple things that you can try first.

1) Run a maintenance program to clean up your system. You can do this very quickly and easily with a free program like CCleaner or Glary Utilities, and a quicker way to defrag is to use Defraggler or Smart Defrag. All much better and faster than the Disk Cleanup or Disk Defragmenter that comes with Windows.

2) Check for updates for your OS.

3) Check for updates for your browser.

4) It won’t hurt to run a spyware/malware scan to see if you have creepy-crawlies that might be clogging up your system. I recommend Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Malwarebytes.

4) Reboot.

We will post other self-help hints as needed.

This mostly applies to new registrations, but occasionally we get emails via the Contact Form notifying us that they are not receiving replies to their queries or information about their new account. This is usually because the spam filter is catching our emails.

Things get really interesting when we receive email after email asking why we aren’t responding. Of course we are answering all emails, but if folks aren’t receiving our replies, there is little we can do to contact folks with the limited information contained in the profiles.

SO- If you wish us to be able to contact or reply to you, please make sure that accountsadmin@sharperiron.org is added to your email address book. If you have done this and are still not receiving responses, please include another method of contact in your message so that we can get in touch with you and work on a solution.

If you are using IE8 and having problems viewing the site, check to see if you have compatibility mode turned on. The compatibility mode icon is just to the right of the address bar. Turn it off while at SI.

Thanks, Susan. Also may help to know: in my tests, it appears that once you turn it off for a site, it stays off when you return to that site. So it’s literally a one-click solution.
