Norm Geisler Defends Liberty's Ergun Caner

“As anyone with experience knows, it is a whole lot easier to make accusations than to answer them. And if one makes them loud enough, long enough, and far enough (namely, through the world-wide internet), a lot of people come to believe them—even if they are not true.” The rest… Caner’s publisher, Kregel, is also defending him.

Discussion

I have interviewed Ergun for more than a dozen television shows and believe his personal testimony to be completely true.
Unfortunately the facts show otherwise!

I wasn’t fully aware of all of the charges against Caner until I read Geisler’s article. Though he was defending Caner, it is clear that Caner didn’t mispeak 2 or 3 times about his past-there is a long, long, long list of “mistatements.” We all make mistatements. Concerning past events, we forget dates, people involved, our age at the time, etc. But that many “mistatements” is too much. Geisler takes the stance that this has been blown out of proportion by enemies of the gospel. If so, why did Liberty demote him?

Yes - impossible to answer accusations when they are not simply accusations, but TRUE

This whole charade is pitiful. Post-modern thought has infiltrated, yea, maybe co-opted, evangelical, fundamental Christianity. It is about time we started applying the same standard (the Word of God, the TRUTH, John 17:17) that we gleefully use on the Obamas, Clintons and politicians of the world on ourselves. We scoff at “too big to fail” when our elected leaders apply it to businesses that have been mismanaged cash-cows for years, and rightfully so. But the same, exact mentality pervades the church. ONLY THE TRUTH MAKES FREE (cf. John 8:32). Our churches, and the broader tent of evangelical/fundamental Christianity, need to start casting aside personalities and stand for the Lord Jesus and the truth. This pitiful dog and pony show has totally discredited Geisler, Ankerberg, Liberty, Caner and every other Christian celebrity author and circus act who refuse to accept that they have accepted a wholesale fraud (Caner) lock, stock and barrel.

The precious Word of God shows men for who they really are before the Lord. Abraham, David, Peter, even Paul are shown to be human and fallible. This never excuses sinful behavior, but shows that “the best of men are men at best.” Condoning lying and misrepresentation is wicked sin (Rom. 1:32). Caner, who through his lies was, in his mind, refuting Islam, has instead become their poster boy. They can now use his lies and misstatements to attempt to prove (in their minds and to their adherents) that all Christianity is false and Christians are liars. And the Geislers of the world are equally culpable for going along with the specious apologetic that answers essentially none of the charges against Caner.

“But let a man examine himself.” “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”
(1 Peter 4:17 KJV)

http://triablogue.blogspot.com/2010/07/ergun-caner-debacle-and-gullibil… The Ergun Caner Debacle and the Gullibility of Evangelicals
With its emphasis on decisional regeneration combined with a shopping mall/market-driven pragmatism of “doing church”, modern evangelicalism has created this mess because it has filled the pews and pulpits with http://graceinthetriad.blogspot.com/2008/02/false-professors-receive-je… false converts . Yes, I just clearly suggested what other men have been cautious to say, Dr. Ergun Caner’s lack of repentance is the mark of a false convert. If any reader of this blog wants to challenge me on that statement, then go ahead. However, if you want to contend that he’s a Christian brother given his perpetual lying combined with his lack of repentance in light of http://www.aomin.org/aoblog/index.php?itemid=3904] his unwillingness to answer clear, unambiguous questions that have been asked of him , then I leave you to your opinion. It’s not as if he hasn’t been given space to repent after the issues have been clearly laid out before him.

In http://crbcviews.blogspot.com/2010/07/enough-with-trees-already.html Enough with the Trees Already! Chantry writes:
In fact, to continue the debate over minutia is to concede the strategy of Caner’s defenders, which evidently runs something like this: We will continue to talk ad nauseum about some of the details of the case, and eventually (when everyone is tired of it) evangelicalism as a whole will look back and say, “There were a lot of perspectives on all the things Caner said. Who really cares?” They seek not an exoneration but rather a shrug.
